By the time he recorded his only full-length American album as a leader, trombonist J.C. Higginbotham (60 at the time) was a bit past his prime. However, he sounds fairly inspired by the rare opportunity and matches wits with the great tenor Bud Freeman and four lesser-known players (trumpeter Dan Havens, pianist Jimmy Weathers, bassist Bob Rix and drummer Ken Lowenstine). Together they jam energetically on versions of a blues and seven standards, including "Indiana," "Dinah" and "Jingle Bells." This obscure effort is easily recommended to Dixieland and pre-bop collectors. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
