The King died August 16, 1977, at the age of 42. At the time of his passing, Elvis Presley had become a caricature, a shadow of his former black-leather-clad self. Bloated, drug-addicted, and unable to make it through a concert, he was a still a hero to aging blue-haired housewives pining for their '50s glory days, but he was nowhere on the current pop-culture radar. However, thanks to some savvy business moves on Priscilla Presley's part, Elvis was turned into a multi-million-dollar machine. According to Forbes, he was the #1 top-earning dead celebrity in 2008, grossing $52 million. The bucks largely come from his home, Graceland, which opened to the public in 1982 and is the second-most-visited private residence in the U.S. Number 1? The White House. It pays to invest in real estate.
