John Lennon was planning his big comeback in 1980. He had just released "Double Fantasy," his first album since '75's "Rock 'n' Roll," and was rehearsing a follow-up, "Milk and Honey." His December 8 murder put an end to his recording career but not his legacy. In the immediate days after his death, "Double Fantasy" - which was initially met with modest fanfare - went from #11 to #1 in the U.S and won an Album of the Year Grammy in 1981. Nearly 30 years later countless reissues, films, and a failed play have kept Lennon's legacy alive - and Yoko's pocketbook full. Actually, the $9 million his estate earned last year went primarily to anti-war charities.
