Ritchie Valens
The forefather of Chicano rock died in a 1959 plane crash with Buddy Holly and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson just as he was riding high with his hit, "Donna." The crash was immortalized in Don McLean's '71 song "American Pie" and Ritchie Valens became a mainstay of oldies radio, but still he was largely forgotten. That is, until the 1987 film "La Bamba," which breathed new life into his career. Los Lobos re-recorded his music for the soundtrack, which spurred a Ritchie Valens resurgence nearly 30 years after his death. Although it may have helped Los Lobos more: Their cover of Valens' "La Bamba" was their only #1 single. Valens' version peaked at only #22.
