Elvis WAS alive in '72. That is not a rumor. He died in August of '77. I believe the rumor about 7-11 and the Kalamazoo Burger King came in '92.

The Detroit DJ's name is/was Russell Gibb. Thank you, jeangeni, for reminding me, I had forgotten that particular bit of trivia.

Want to know more? This looks like a pretty good source:

Having written my junior class english paper on the "Paul is Dead" rumors, I can say that there were a lot more than a couple of "clues" as to Sir Paul's demise. There were a couple of dozen clues spanning several albums and the clues were both in the music lyrics and the photos and cover art that accompanied those old 33 1/3 rpm LP's. (Do a search if you don't know what those are). To think all the clues were merely coincidence stretches belief. To this day, even though it has been denied, I think that sly ol' John Lennon had something to do with it to get his kicks in seeing how long it would take us to catch on. It took us a while and that probably delighted John greatly. RIP John and George this world is just a bit darker place without you.

You are so right. I was in Detroit at the time the rumors started and remember it vividly throughout the next several years. And everytime the Beatles released a new album the search was on for more clues...... LOL Aaaahhh, the fun memories!!!

Ok. Curious as to who the DJ was in Detroit who was credited with starting the rumor "Paul Is Dead"? Anyone know?

Paul is Dead: There were many more clues: 1)Check out the Sgt Peppers cover. The person behind Paul is Welsh and the hand over the head is their sign of death. 2)The grave is in the shape of a bass guitar. 3) On the Magical Mystery Tour Album, Paul has a black carnation while the rest have red. 4) The song Strawberry Fields ends and then comes back with the words fron John Lennoe "I buried Paul" only john said "I'm very bored" 5) The Abbey Road album also has Paul with his eyes closed, George "the grave digger"; John "the Preacher" and Ringo "the angel in white". 6) The VW in the background was totalled in an accident that killed someone and 7) The song I'd love to turn you on has the words" He blew his mind out in a car, he didn't notice that the lights had changed, people stood & stared, the'd seen his face before, nobody was really sure if he was from the house of Lords".

This hoax lasted for several years over several albums, nothing like it has ever beed seen since!
