Looking good will always be a part of our culture. As I realized on my recent visit to NYC with my kids. I went from waiting in line to get into dance clubs like Danceteria (big Madonna fan back then) and Limelight in the 80's...how we looked got us in...to waiting in line so that my 12 and 14 year old daughters could take a photo with a shirtless Abercrombie & Fitch model on Fifth Avenue!

Looking Good Is The Best Revenge

As "One Day at a Time's" incredibly adorable Barbara Cooper (practically the template for the "girl next door" in the '70s) Valerie Bertinelli truly had it going on. Great figure, silky hair, bubbly personality. Then she married guitar god Eddie Van Halen in 1981 and seemed to be living the storybook life.

But the fairy tale ended with a 2007 divorce, by which time America's former sweetheart was 172 pounds. Then Eddie announced his engagement to his publicist, Janie Liszewski, 15 years his junior. Sorry, we don't care how "amicable" a breakup is: When your ex is remarrying, it kicks you into gear. Valerie didn't take it lying down. Thanks to Jenny Craig and a whole lot of exercise, she lost 40 pounds and appeared on the cover of People magazine in a bright-green string bikini. Take that, Ed. Valerie proves that looking good is the best revenge, joining the ranks of other Hollywood beauties who managed to have the last laugh in love.
