After a lot of heated debate with network execs and religious leaders, Lucille Ball became one of the first women to ever appear pregnant on a TV show. It was so taboo, in fact, that they couldn't say the word "pregnant" on "I Love Lucy." Instead, they had to say she was "expecting" (or "spectin," as Desi would say to great laughter). The buttoned-up, boxy maternity fashions represented the repressed era very well.
