December 21, 1970. Nixon honored Elvis with a drug award. Not for doing drugs, for fighting against them. Seems Elvis wrote a letter to the President concerned about drug use in the U.S. So Nixon gave him a Drug Enforcement Agency badge and made him an honorary agent. Rumor has it Elvis did it to get the badge. He collected them. Whatever the reason, it began a tradition of druggies, radicals, and oddball pairings at the White House.
