The jumpsuit started as a practical garment for auto mechanics, astronauts, and race car drivers. Protective, easy to maneuver, and lots of pockets for stashing tools and keys. But somewhere along the line, rock stars commandeered the fashion and made it their own. Some, like Pete Townshend merely took that greasers uniform onstage. While others, like Elvis Presley and Neil Diamond added some sequins, studs, and flair to the otherwise drab unitard. David Bowie made it femme and body-huggingly tight, and then the ladies introduced leopard skin, silk, and pleather to the mix. Here's our look at rock jumpsuits through the years.

Suzi Quatro's outfit isn't a jumpsuit. It's a top and bottom made to look the same. If you look close, you can see that she has her right thumb under the top a little bit.

joan jett and grace joans look the best to me! Towsned looks really at home in a jumpsuit. What about Devo? The Clash also had some cool jumsuits or were Devo's and the Clash more blue collar jumpsuits/hazmat suits?
