Sheryl Crow ... that is definitely a subjective one. I have her records, but I have to admit I have cringed when she has sung live here and there. Seems like she can sing in the studio to record her records, or when things are in a limited vocal range, but her image (hot rock chick with a guitar) and packaging and most importantly ... I will say it again ... her songwriting has made her huge. Many listeners these days seem to listen to the songs and their catchy hooks more than the singer. Just my opinion.

Divalasvegas...My husband plays with a band and I am a backup singer. I believe that there is so much hidden talent out there it is unreal. American idol to me is joke, I only watch the tryouts now cause it's funny. It is really funny when different people try out for lead, he wants me to do it, but it is too much work. We have kids and I am in Nursing School...That's what is most important to me! But if ppl would take the time to actually listen to the background they almost usually sound better than the artist performing...LOL

I agree with you CSSHOP. I love Ledisi, Maysa, Layla Hathoway, and Jill Scott; all of these singers don't get enough credit. But if you think about it alot of the Neo Soul singers don't get alot of recognition because it is not POP. But that's ok, because they do have a fan base. I like real music. All the songs that are coming out now sound the same...It's becoming sicking. I'm listening to Ledisis right now and she is a lyrical genius.

Uuuh, Hip Hop became Music in the early 80's, FYI. What do u consider music?

Thank you for doing this. The only problem is that about 98% of most grammy winners can't sing. Since when did screaming become a substitute for singing and when did hip hop become considered music?

WTF? Are u ppl effin serious?? All these singers and no one has mentioned Britney Spears' stupid ass! And let's not forget J.LO, that chic should stick to acting cuz she can't sing worth a damn! And Lil' Miss Disfuntional (Brit) she should just face it, she's through... a "has been", nuthin but a "HAS BEEN"!! Oops, my bad, she NEVER was. The only thing that got her so famous, was her good looks. I'd rather hear Paris talk about how hot she is all day than listen to Dumb Ass or J.Ho sing even one song! Mary J was off the hook even when she started her career and Christina Aguilera, NOW THAT IS TALENT! If ppl are sayin that Christina or Celine can't sing, well those "haters" are just hatin cuz they can't!!

Jenaynay ... yes you are right. There are many more that started as backup singers. Some want more glory, some are cool touring. I should compile of list of backup singers that are big artists now.
