Both hit the streets in 1975. Pet Rocks burned fast and bright for six months. Then everyone realized they were paying $4 for something they could grab off the street for free (and some even trained them for $29.95). Pop Rocks were popular until someone said mixing them with soda killed little Mikey from the Life Cereal commercial. Don't worry, he's alive and well and working as an ad exec — who'd have thought? Green Day immortalized the not-so-deadly combination in song -— watch the "Poprocks & Coke" video.

October 25, 1975. America joined Mary Tyler Moore at the funeral of Chuckles the Clown. “A little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down your pants.” That was Chuckles’ motto. He had a kids show that taped at WJM-TV in Minneapolis, Minnesota, just down the hall from Mary Richards, Ted Baxter, and Lou Grant. But on this tragic episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show called “Chuckles Bites The Dust,” the local funnyman chose the wrong character from his repertoire for a parade appearance — Peter Peanut. Who could blame that elephant for going berserk at the sight of him and, while simply seeking a giant snack, accidentally shelling him to death? It’s Mary’s reaction at Chuckles’ funeral that makes this one of the Top 10 funniest episodes of television EVER. Read more about The Mary Tyler Moore Show here.

I'm not complaining. I loved the TV programs we had in the '70s: all the Sid & Marty Krofft stuff, like Lidsville, H.R. Pufnstuf, The Bugaloos, and Land Of The Lost. But this was clearly before musicians were hip to kids programming. But that's cool; we got Charles Nelson Reilly, Martha Raye, Billy Barty, Jack Wild, and Cha-Ka, while our kids get shows like Yo Gabba Gabba! with the Aquabats, Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh, pop rapper Biz Markie, and featured indie guests like the Shins. Could Glen Campbell, Fleetwood Mac, and the Bee Gees have made such a leap? Nahhhhhhhhh.
